Nightlife

Melbourne has a buzzing nightlife with a plethora of bars and clubs across the city, catering to all tastes. The central business district, where the after-work drinkers go, also attracts a young, trendy crowd. Many of the smarter bars are alongside the Yarra River and are very popular, and Southgate, a modern complex built on the south bank, houses a wide selection of bars and restaurants, clubs, exclusive stores and cinemas.

The varied nature of the bars and clubs means that the dress code varies enormously, but generally the trendier the place, the stricter the dress code. Entrance to clubs is free but often at weekends a fee is introduced after 2100 and especially if there is a live band. Gay Melbourne has its base in the suburb of Prahran with numerous pubs, clubs and discos. Melbourne has very relaxed licensing hours and it is possible to drink through the night.

Bars:
One of the most popular bars in the Southgate complex is Walters Wine Bar, which is noted for its fabulous wines, good food and great views. Inspired by 1950s New York, Up Top Bar, 163 Russell Street, is a fun drinking venue. Other notable central drinking locations include Gin Palace, 190 Little Collins Street, The Purple Emerald Lounge Bar, 191 Flinders Lane, and Troika Bar, 106 Little Lonsdale Street.

Casinos:
Crown Casino, in the Crown Entertainment Complex, Southgate, is open 24 hours daily and offers blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat and poker machines. Dress is smart-casual, although a jacket and tie is required for some areas.

Clubs:
Revolver Upstairs, at 229 Chapel Street, Prahran, has proved a big hit on the Melbourne club scene, featuring nightly appearances by top DJs. Q Bar, on Toorak Road, South Yarra, is open all night featuring house music as well as arcade games and pool tables. Tatou, 377 Little Collins Street, is a bar, restaurant and nightclub with nights of techno and retro music, while Chasers, 386 Chapel Street, South Yarra, is one of Melbourne's oldest nightlubs and has house, funk, drum'n'bass and retro music on different nights. Melbourne Metro Nightclub, 20 Bourke Street, has a great variety of music ranging from progressive house to grunge and commercial dance.

Live music:
The Palace, on Lower Esplanade, is an extensive and popular venue for large-scale dance parties with live techno bands performing regularly. The Corner Hotel, 57 Swan Street, Richmond, has established a reputation as one of the main venues for alternative bands from both Australia and overseas.
